Saturday May 3rd Workshops:
- 12:30pm @ Nexxus Movement: Goddexx Unleashed – Building Stage Presence w/ Honey Bee Rose (90 min, $29) – “I never felt so comfortable being myself until I had seen you dance” is one of the most compelling compliments to receive off stage. Come unleash your prowess & build self confidence with Burlesque Hall of Fame’s 2024 Queen of Burlesque! In this class, you are led through a discussion to set intentions, learn movement that challenges the level of tease you bring to the table & build stage presence. Learn to walk the floor, stage routines, find your grounding, and support the energy you are emoting. By the end of class, whether you perform on stages big or small, this class will have audiences at your full attention. You’re invited to come explore regardless of dance experience. This class is intimate. Bring note taking materials, water/hydration. Performance shoes optional.
- 2:00pm @ Nexxus Movement: Intro to Fabulous Flowing Fans w/ Allura Fette (60 min, $29) – Have a pair of silk veil fans but don’t really know how to get started with them? This beginner’s class will cover a variety of topics including selection of veil fans, upkeep, hand placement, and various ways to move with your fans. Taught from the perspective of flow arts and burlesque, you’ll gain a solid foundation on which to build your own fan flow!
- 12:30pm @ Myriad Yoga: Flexibility and Dynamic Choreography for Burlesque w/ Scarlet Starlet (90 min, $20) – Learn an effective and safe stretch routine to gain flexibility over time. We will go through a quick warm-up and series of static stretches followed by a variety of ways to move across the floor and take up space on stage. Then we will go into larger movements across the floor (kicks, jumps, turns- as many as time allows) focusing on technique and working within each individual’s current range of motion. Wear comfortable clothes you can move and stretch in. If you have jazz shoes or ballet shoes, those are great. Bare feet/socks work totally fine as well. I try to keep this class very beginner-friendly, but it is open to all levels and has modifications to make moves and stretches more or less challenging for each individual. Each student in class can be given a video link to the stretch routine we go over so they are able to practice it at home.
- 2pm @ Myriad Yoga: Sh!t Happens! w/ Autumn Leaves (60 min, $20) –
Let’s face it, performing can be unpredictable at times! Between our nerves, unfamiliar staging conditions, technical difficulties, costume malfunctions, it’s almost a sure thing that sh!t’s going to go wrong eventually, just a matter of when. During this workshop, we’ll talk about the importance of recovering after the unexpected happens, as well as ways to prepare yourself for such an occasion. The audience is on your side and wants you to succeed, and the best part of an on-stage blunder is nailing the recovery! The second half of the workshop we will be doing some basic choreography and then throwing some chaos in there so you can apply what you’ve learned. Feel free to bring costume pieces and/or dance heels you’d like to practice in!
Sunday May 4th Workshops:
- 12:30pm @ Nexxus Movement: HilariTEASE: Finding the Funny in Your Burlesque Performances! w/ Teasy Roosevelt (90 min ,$29)- Ludacris! Parody! Satire! This is burlesque! Burlesque is comedy! Comedy is Burlesque! In this workshop you will learn the foundations of what makes a great comedic burlesque routine. Students will receive a brief overview of the history of comedy in burlesque, as well as the craft of comedy writing (sketch and stand-up) and how one can incorporate these writing methods into their routine. Students will also learn basic improv techniques to “cover up” those pesky on stage mistakes. “Follow the Fear” and embrace the absurdity! By the end of this workshop, you will have the tips and tricks to turn your funny idea into a funny act. This workshop is open to all levels.
- 2:00pm @ Nexxus Movement: Take a Damn Seat: Exploring Chair Choreography w/ Matt Adore (90 min, $21.75) – Have you ever wanted to try choreographing a chair act but don’t know where to start? In this beginner-friendly class, we’ll take an exploratory approach to moving around and with your new dancer partner, the humble chair! Emphasizing clean lines and smooth transitions from one pose to the next, this class will prepare you to make the most of your chair choreography and find the movements that feel great in your body and look even better on stage. Class will include a warm up, an exploration of different angles and levels in your chair choreography, and a short sequence of transitions set to various songs. This is a class for all levels with no prerequisites. Students should come prepared and dressed to move with comfy pants that cover the knee (to help slide). We will be barefoot or in socks.
- 12:30pm @ Myriad Yoga: Movement Improvisation Skills w/ Lavendelle (90 min, $15) – This all-levels workshop will lead participants through movement improvisation exercises to help build confidence and comfort with exploring new movements. Do you ever feel stuck and uninspired when creating choreography for an act? Have you ever gotten on stage and realized that you need to make adjustments in the moment? This workshop will introduce you to improvisation exercises that will build your skills and give you practical tools to use when you need to create! What to wear: Please wear clothing you feel comfortable moving in. Footwear is your choice – socks, tennis shoes, heels, barefoot, any option is acceptable. Injuries and Accommodations: If you have any injuries you’d like Lavendelle to be aware of so she can provide modifications, or if you need to request any accommodations to make sure you can fully enjoy class, please email lavendelleburlesque@gmail.com.
- 2pm @ Myriad Yoga: Stretching for Splits & High Kicks w/ Rose Faluda (60 min, $15) – A workshop on getting or deepening your splits. We will go through dynamic stretching exercises that will build up strength and flexibility for splits and high kicks! This class is for all levels: whether you are nowhere close to your splits or if you are already there and want to get even deeper. We will also go over techniques that you can take outside this workshop to get your splits.
